I’m thrilled to share that RegTech Africa Magazine has recognized my contributions in 2023 by featuring me on their cover edition! This special issue highlights my work in advocating for ethical AI and emphasizes the critical importance of designing and deploying AI systems that uphold fairness, reliability, safety, privacy, and security. Drawing inspiration from frameworks like Google’s AI Principles, I discuss strategies to ensure AI is socially beneficial, avoids bias, prioritizes safety, and remains transparent and accountable.
AI in National Security and Trade
Artificial intelligence plays a pivotal role in national security, particularly in optimizing data processing from defense sensors like radar, sonar, and electronic warfare systems. It also enhances mission preparation through immersive simulators and facilitates the operational application of research and technology. For example, France’s Ministry of Defense has allocated an average budget of €100 million annually under its 2019–2025 Military Programming Law, along with plans to recruit 200 AI specialists by 2023.
•On a global scale, AI is transforming value chains by improving predictions of future trends. A recent OECD report on Artificial Intelligence and International Trade identifies four key phases in an AI system’s lifecycle:
1.Design, Data, and Modeling: Involves planning, data collection, processing, and model interpretation.
2.Verification and Validation: Focuses on model fine-tuning and optimization.
3.Deployment: Includes piloting, regulatory compliance, and user experience evaluation.
4.Operation and Monitoring: Centers on continuous monitoring to align outputs with desired objectives.
•The OECD report concludes that trade policy plays a critical role across these phases, facilitating access to goods, services, people, and data while emphasizing the importance of intellectual property protection and international standards. To ensure that AI serves humanity, this connection between AI and trade must be translated into comprehensive international legislation, rules, regulations, and ethical frameworks.
